Post-Lunch Nap
— Taslima Hasan
How long it has been since I spent an afternoon in the bliss of a post-lunch nap—
How long since I last heard
the call of an unfamiliar bird.
May cloud-soft lips descend
upon the earth’s breast,
steeped in the fragrance of *bakul* flowers.
The waters of the Padma have lost their former verve;
vast, sandy riverbanks lie parched and cracked,
echoing the farmer’s silent grievances and laments.
Trees have always been generous, offering their gifts with tender care—
‘krishnachura’ blooms bathed in butterfly-hued sunlight,
and bougainvillea, vibrant in its lavish, colorful display.
The scorching sun races forward with a fierce, piercing intensity;
the asphalt road exhales a searing heat,
stretching the traveler’s path ever further.
Like the *chatak* bird, eyes fixed upon the sky—
sparks of fire rain down;
O Nature, grant us your grace.
May cloud-soft lips descend,
may a stream of peace flow down—
let a rain of joy fall upon these weary, scorched eyes.
Amidst the gentle, loving rain and the scent of purple blossoms,
in the quiet of the afternoon, I drift away
into a blissful post-lunch nap.
